Galvalume vs Painted Metal Roofing
When ordering metal roofing panels, one of the first decisions is whether to go with bare Galvalume or a factory-applied paint finish. Both are excellent materials, but they serve different purposes.
What Is Galvalume?
Galvalume is a steel sheet coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy (55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, 1.6% silicon). This coating provides exceptional corrosion resistance without any paint. Galvalume has a distinctive silvery metallic appearance that weathers to a matte gray over time.
Galvalume is the standard substrate for almost all metal roofing panels. When people say painted metal roofing, they mean Galvalume with an additional paint coating on top.
Unpainted Galvalume
Cost: 20-30% less than painted panels. No paint means lower material cost. Performance: excellent corrosion resistance in Arizona's dry climate. Galvalume actually performs best in arid environments because there is minimal moisture to cause corrosion. Lifespan: 40-60 years in Arizona. Appearance: industrial/utilitarian. Best for agricultural buildings, workshops, and structures where aesthetics are secondary.
Painted Galvalume
Cost: $1-3 more per square foot than bare Galvalume. Paint systems range from standard polyester ($1 premium) to premium Kynar/PVDF ($2-3 premium). Performance: the paint adds UV protection to the underlying Galvalume, extending total lifespan. Kynar/PVDF coatings resist fading and chalking for 30+ years. Lifespan: 50-70 years with premium coatings. Appearance: available in dozens of colors, from bright whites to deep earth tones. Professional, finished look suitable for any building type.
Which Should You Choose?
For residential homes, customer-facing commercial buildings, and any project where appearance matters, painted Galvalume with a Kynar/PVDF coating is the clear choice. The color options and fade resistance justify the small premium.
For agricultural buildings, workshops, storage structures, and utility buildings where cost is the primary concern, bare Galvalume performs superbly in Arizona's climate and saves 20-30% on materials.
